RAV4's standard 203-horsepower four-cylinder engine outmuscles the Escape's 181-hp three-cylinder. And with an extra inch of ground clearance and available off-road variants like Adventure and TRD Off-Road, the RAV4 is better suited to go exploring beyond the asphalt.

Both models offer available plug-in hybrid powertrains for Elyria drivers looking to enter the world of electrified automobility. However, the RAV4 Prime offers an extra five miles of electric-only range (EPA-est. 42 vs. 37).  Plus, RAV4 Prime is one of Toyota's quickest models, capable of sprinting to 60 mph from a standstill in under 5.5 seconds. The Escape PHEV practically crawls in comparison, needing an additional three seconds to reach the same speed.

Despite identical starting MSRPs, the RAV4 is appreciably better equipped than Escape. RAV4 comes standard with features like LED headlights, a touchscreen infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You have to move up a level to get advanced smartphone integration and all the way to the top tier for LED headlights on Escape. And if you move up just one trim level on RAV4, you'll get features like a power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated mirrors, and fog lights. None of these are standard on Escape's equally-priced second-tier trim.

Both models come standard with a suite of advanced driver aids, including collision mitigation, lane-departure mitigation, and automatic high beams. However, RAV4 also comes standard with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist. These features require an optional package on Escape, and it's not available on the base trim.

The Toyota RAV4 comes standard with roof rails (raised on Adventure and TRD Off-Road) on all but the base tier, giving you additional cargo options beyond the interior capacity. You can get normal roof rails on Escape, but you have to climb higher on the trim ladder.
